Getting Started
New Cavers
Everything you need to know to get underground with CPSS.
No Experience Required
Caving is for everyone
You don't need to be fearless, or experienced to join CPSS. We have members from all walks of life. What you do need is curiosity and a willingness to get muddy. We'll handle the rest.

Learn the Basics
Over time, you'll build skills in caving movement, rope work, navigation, and cave safety.
Join a Beginner Trip
Your first trip will be an easy, guided cave experience with experienced CPSS members. You don’t need much gear to get started — just a helmet and a headlamp (preferably two, with one as backup), along with a sense of adventure.
Become a Member
This year is focused on building a community of people interested in caving and CPSS, with formal membership opening again in 2027. As a member, you’ll gain access to all club trips, the mailing list, and SASA annual bulletin publications. Membership is subject to an annual fee.
Preparation
What to bring
- Hiking shoes
- Clothes you don't mind getting muddy (overalls best)
- A helmet
- A headlamp/torch (preferably two, with one as backup)
- Water and snacks for the day
- A small bag or backpack for your kit
Safety First
CPSS takes cave safety seriously. All trips are led by experienced cavers following established safety protocols. We never push anyone beyond their comfort level, and we always prioritise the well-being of everyone on the trip — and the cave itself.
